- Wipe the collet and nut, brush the taper
- Return everything to its foam cut-out

- Inspect collets for marks or cracks
- Count the foam: an empty cut-out means something is in someone's pocket

- Replace collets that fail runout
- Light grease on the nut thread
- Clean the case itself, dust gets everywhere

- One spare collet per common size
- Spare nut
- Replacement brushes
Local conditions
In dusty inland shops, a collet that is wiped daily lasts far longer than one that is only cleaned when it gives trouble. On the coast, a very light film of oil on stored collets keeps the rust off.
