Who it is for
Bracket and frame shops, burglar bar and gate makers, farm repair workshops and agricultural fabricators who cut mild steel every day and want consistent parts without a big table.
What it does on the floor
A compact air plasma table cuts mild steel brackets, gussets, base plates and flanges from sheet and light plate. With the right consumables and cut chart, edges need little cleanup before welding.
It is noisier, dirtier and more electrical than a router, so it needs its own corner. Fume extraction, a water or downdraft table and a clear path for sheet loading are part of the machine, not extras. Get those right and the table becomes the most profitable square metre in a steel shop.
Mistakes we see in the first month
- Running consumables past their life, which ruins edge quality and bevel before anyone notices.
- Sharing the compressor with the paint booth or tyre bay, so air pressure drops mid-cut.
- Putting the table next to the router, where the sparks and grinding dust do not belong.
South African conditions
Gate and burglar bar work is steady trade across the country, and a lot of it is repeat sizes. Keep a library of the common bracket and finial files with cut charts per thickness. On the coast, store sheet off the floor and covered, because surface rust affects pierce quality.
Space and power at a glance
About 1800 x 1500 mm for a compact table, plus room for the power source and a sheet trolley. Dedicated circuit sized for the power source, often three phase for thicker plate.
Care at a glance
- Check the nozzle and electrode, swap as a pair when worn
- Drain the air filter bowl
- Clear slag from the slats before it builds up
Spares worth keeping close: nozzles and electrodes in sets, swirl ring and shield cap, slats, spare air filter element.
